340 suicides by farmers in Amravati distt in a yr

In Amravati district alone, 340 farmers have committed suicides in 2016, admitted Rehabilitation Minister Chandrakant Patil in a written answer in the Assembly.
Responding to a question by Vijay Wadettiwar and 11 others about the steps taken by the Government to stop suicides by farmers, Patil said that 13,517 farmers have committed suicides in Amravati and Wardha districts combined.
Out of these, 7,550 cases were invalid while 62 cases were pending for inquiry, he added.


In Buldana district, 219 farmers have ended their lives between January and November 2016. The families of the victims are given an aid of Rs one lakh. To prevent suicides, the Government has set up Chetna Mission on pilot basis at Yavatmal and Usmanabad districts. Under Vasantrao Naik Shetkari Swawlamban Mission, programmes are being run in all the districts of Amravati, Marathwada and in Wardha district, he added.
