IT WAS a tale of two hat-tricks. One had submerged in a heartbreaking loss in the evening. But as the night turned on another piece of three wickets in three balls got the topping of a much-needed victory. While Samuel Badree would keep ruing his team’s loss in Bengaluru, miles away in Rajkot, Andrew Tye was relishing Gujarat Lions’ first win in IPL that had come on his hat-trick.
Debutant Tye registered the second hat-trick of the day to enable Gujarat Lions restrict Rising Pune Supergiant to 171 for eight.
It was a score that would test any team. And Pune had the bowling to test bottom-placed Gujarat. But as it turned out the Lions found their roar at the right time and they hunted in pack with captain Suresh Raina (35*), Aaron Finch (33*), Brendon McCullum (49), Dwayne Smith (47) striking rich.
Gujarat completed the tight chase quite easily losing just three wickets and with two overs to spare.
Smith and McCullum laid the foundation with a blistering 94 run stand for the first wicket in just 8.5 overs. Their wickets and later Dinesh Karthick’s scalp by Imran Tahir raised a faint hope for Steve Smith’s side. But Raina was in no mood to let it slip this time. He completed the formalities with Finch, who finished the game by hitting Lockie Ferguson for two sixes in consecutive matches.
Earlier, right-arm pacer Tye, playing his first IPL match, returned with impressive figures of 5 for 17 from his four overs to keep Supergiant under check, especially after a blazing start by opener Rahul Tripathi (33 off 17) and skipper Steven Smith (43 off 28).
