GUJARAT Lions skipper Suresh Raina led from the front as the bottom ranked team upset second placed Kolkata Knight Riders by four wickets in their Indian Premier League match, here on Friday.

In pursuit of Kolkata’s 187 for five, Gujarat reached the target with four wickets and ten balls to spare.

Raina scored match-winning 84 that included nine hits to the boundary and four over it in his 46 balls essay. The foundation of the onslaught was well laid by openers Aaron Finch (31) and Brendon McCullum (33) as the duo raced away to 42 in 3.3 overs.

Rain briefly interrupted the chase and the Lions, 62 for one in five overs, were 21 runs ahead of the D/L par score when play was halted. But when the play resumed, Lions lost wickets in heaps and were 122-5. With equation well under control after Raina’s knock, Ravindra Jadeja (19) and James Faulkner (4) took the side home.

Earlier, a brilliant Robin Uthappa slammed his second half century of the tournament while Sunil Narine played a cameo at the top as Kolkata Knight Riders toyed with Gujarat Lions lacklustre attack.

It was raining boundaries and sixes at Eden Gardens with Narine using his long handle to great effect.

Narine played 42-run cameo knock that came off just 17 balls as he and skipper Gautam Gambhir put together quickfire 45 runs off 20 balls for the opening stand to get KKR off to a blazing start.

After Narine’s departure, Uthappa, in his 50th appearance for KKR, made a feast of the lacklustre Gujarat Lions attack and smashed 72 runs in 47 balls with the help of eight fours and two sixes to post his second fifty.
