Business Bureau,

In order to lessen the pressure on the employees, banks should fill vacancies, said Upendra Kumar, National General Secretary of National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW). Kumar was addressing media on Friday evening. Kumar was in city to attend the 19th Tri-annual Conference of VBEF on April 8 at Devi Ahalya Mandir, Dhantoli . He continued that the recruitment of the Class III category had been totally stopped by the banks. As a result, the pressure on other employees were increasing. “The temporary workers and the persons from where the outsourcing is done should be regularised by the banks,” he said. “The people who are working in the fourth grade category are not been given permanent jobs. Even, for small work, people who are from the SC/ST category should be given opportunity by the banks and deploy them,” he demanded.

Every year, banking industry needs two lakh people. However, banks are not taking initiatives to recruit the people, he pointed out.
He said that NOBW was very serious about the increasing non-performing assets (NPAs) of the banks. The NPAs in the banks had touched Rs 6.14 lakh crore which had weaken them financially. “Banks should recover NPAs from the wilful defaulters as well as from big corporate houses,” he said. Even, NOBW had submitted memorandum to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Wilful defaulters should be declared criminals, he demanded.

Kumar said, the directors of the banks should be hold solely responsible for the making the banks weak. “In banking industry, there is no system to punish bank directors who had given huge amount of loans to corporate houses which have become NPAs,” he noted.

Kumar appreciated the merger of State Bank of India (SBI) with its Associate Banks. Whatever Government facilities SBI employees were enjoying, Associate Banks employees would also get the same to them. According to him, the biggest challenge before the NOBW is to strengthen the banks so that they can compete in global market.

Present on the occasion were Chandrakant Khanzode, President of Vidarbha Bank Employees Federation (VBEF), Prakash Sowany, General Secretary of VBEF, Rajiv Pande, All India Office Secretary of NOBW, Archana Sowany, Treasurer of NOBW and Suresh Choudhari, Media Incharge of NOBW.
