MPHA women defeat Haryana to win Junior National Hockey C’ship

Host Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy (MPHA) defeated Hockey Haryana 2-1 in final match played in “A” category of Hockey India 7th Junior National Hockey Championship (women) in State capital on Sunday night. Till half time, Madhya Pradesh Hockey was lagging behind by a goal but after change of ends, it scored two goals to seal victory.


The match started amid cheering atmosphere. Hockey Haryana played with rhythm to build pressure on Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy. Hockey Haryana’s captain Ritu scored the first goal of the match by converting penalty corner in 17th minute. Stunned by getting down by a goal, Madhya Pradesh Hockey players showed brilliant stick work. On few occasions, strikers of Madhya Pradesh Hockey reached close to hit the equaliser, but onrushing players of Hockey Haryana blocked their shots. Till half time, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy tried to surmount pressure on rivals, looking for an equaliser opportunity but all in vain.


Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy players produced a clinical performance after change of ends. The relentless pressure on opposition provided couple of chances to Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy. It was in 39th minute that MPHA’s Neelu Dadiya equated the score by hitting goal through penalty stroke. Upset with the equaliser goal of MPHA, Hockey Haryana went on to play in aggressive style. On the other hand, MPHA too dished out exemplary game skills, raiding the citadel of Hockey Haryana often. As both teams were playing with aggression, trying to look for a lead goal, game entered into an interesting phase.

MPHA shocked Hockey Haryana in 63rd minute when its 7 number player Neeraj Rana swung the stick to zoom ball into the net. Neeraj Rana’s field goal put MPHA in lead position of match.


With barely few minutes left for final hooter of the match, Hockey Haryana tried to do swift counter attack. On couple of occasions, Hockey Haryana strikers reached near the goal post of rivals, but wary MPHA fizzled out the attack. When the final hooter was sounded, MPHA players ran amok on ground, hugged each other to celebrate the victory over Hockey Haryana by 2-1. Later, award ceremony was held in which finance secretary of Madhya Pradesh Government, Anirudh Mukerjee presented winner trophy to Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy (MPHA) and runner up Hockey Haryana.

Deputy Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Directorate, B S Yadav, P S Bundela, former Olympian P V Govinda, Tournament Director Rakesh Bhatia were also present.
