Two DRG troopers seriously injured during gun-battle in Bijapur

The seriously injured troopers were being air-lifted to Raipur for further and advanced medical treatment

TWO District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel sustained critical injuries in an exchange of fire with ultras in State’s insurgency-hit Bijapur district on Sunday morning.


The skirmish took place at around 11 am when a joint team of security forces was carrying out an anti-Maoist operations in the forests of district’s Basaguda area bordering with Jagargunda area (Sukma district), informed Bastar Range Inspector General of Police Vivekanand Sinha.


A joint team of Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG), CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) and district force had been engaged in search operation in Basaguda and Awapalli area, some 450 km away from the state capital since yesterday.


When the security forces were advancing through forests of Raigundam village on the border of Bijapur and Sukma, armed Naxals opened indiscriminate firing on them leading to a gun-battle between both the sides, said the IG, adding that the Red Rebels soon fled the scene on finding security personnel zeroing on them.


The two injured DRG personnel identified as Head Constable Raju Kodmul and Assistant Constable Suresh Madkam have been evacuated out of the forest and are being airlifted to Raipur for further treatment, the IG said adding that their condition was said to be stable.


Till the report last came in, insurgency operation was still underway in the jungles.
