Girls in semis, boys edged out

IT WAS a mixed day for Nagpur hoopsters as the girls made it to the semi-finals while the boys went down fighting in the State Under-18 Basketball Championship in progress at Balewadi indoor stadium Pune, on Wednesday night.

Riding on some superb performance by the quartet of Shreya Dandekar, Rasika Pande, Siddha Deshmukh and Abha Lad, city girls got the better of Dhule 65-52. Though the girls were outplayed in the second and third quarters, they bounced back in style to seal a spot in the last four.


In a see-saw thrilling encounter, Nagpur boys were pipped by just two points in their quarter-final by Mumbai Central. After trailing 25-34 at the half-time, Nagpur boys rallied brilliantly to take the third quarter 17-9, reducing the deficit to just one point. In an exciting last period, Mumbai boys scored narrow one point lead to finally win 56-54.

Boys: Mumbai Central (Hitesh Bapna 13, Shivam Mishra 12) bt Nagpur (Yash Jiwtode 11, Piyush Singh 11, Dhruv Dhabe 11, Rishab Choudhary 9, Sharvil Bomanwar 8) 56-54 (18-19, 16-6, 9-17, 13-12).
