Staff Reporter,

In a post-dusk operation, sleuths of Income Tax Department Assessment Wing launched concurrent survey operations at over half-a-dozen premises belonging to family members of Indian Forest Service (IFS) cadre officer Sanjay Shukla, who is presently Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Naya Raipur Development Authority (NRDA).

The survey conducted under Section 133 (A) of Income Tax Act saw the taxmen mostly covering the multiple premises owned by NRDA CEO’s wife Piyush Shukla, son, his two brothers and some other family members. However, there were no confirmed reports regarding the seizure of cash or valuables during the survey.

All these commercial premises are situated at a single location spread over a vast stretch of land, situated near Hotel Grand Imperia on VIP Road, towards Raipur Airport.
According to sources in Income Tax Department, the taxmen were seen swarming all over Shukla’s Kitchen, Shukla’s Barbeque, Woodland, Iris Café, Opium Lounge, Greenwood Fourseasons housing three marriage lawns, in addition to a Hukkah Bar. “Though the premises belonged to a top State Government official, we still ensured police escort in order to deal with any kind of resistance. However, the tax officers faced no opposition at any places so far and the operation was going on smooth,” the sources added.

Sources averred that a 22-member team of taxmen, including 15 police personnel, 5 Income Tax Officers (ITOs) led by two Assistant Commissioners (Assessment Range) T K Chaterjee and A Uike were taking part in the operations. “The whole survey operation was planned and executed by the Income Tax Department only after they probed a precise financial intelligence inputs regarding tax evasion practice by this famous hospitality group,” the sources added.

Sources pointed out the group came under the scanner only due to its sheer meteoric rise in the sector during past 4 years and their subsequent expansion. “The preliminary investigation has found that hefty amount was spent on expansion of the group, whose Group Directors are Piyush Shukla and Suryansh Shukla. “While Piyush is wife and Suryansh is son of Sanjay Shukla, the taxmen were also investigating if the two brothers of the officer also have their stakes in the group,” the sources added.

To a query, an IT official requesting anonymity told this newspaper reporter that they usually do not cover residential premises during the surveys, but any resistance would force the department expand the extent of the operation right up to their residential premises. “Our teams were closely scrutinizing the incriminate documents recovered from the different premises, which indicated that hefty amount of unaccounted income was pumped into group from outside, wherein trail of some concealed money have already been traced,” they revealed.
The survey operation, according to the sources, was likely to continue till Tuesday evening.
