Union Catalogue of Indian Universities (IndCat) put Barkatullah University in defaulter list as university failed to contribute bibliography records of documents available in its library under the scheme on Automation of University Libraries during IX Plan periods.

Vikram University, Ujjain has also been included in defaulter list for the same reason. However, Barkatullah University officials are unaware of the issue and they denied the catalogue. U N Shukla, University Registrar, said he is unaware of this matter. To make reach of rare books easy for research scholars and academicians, University Grants Commission (UGC) recommended universities to be associated with Union Catalogue of Universities.

There are 173 libraries of different universities across country associated with this catalogue. Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidalaya (RGPV) and National Law University Institute (NLIU) Bhopal have also joined the union catalogue to search standard books. Apart from this, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (Indore), Awadesh Pratap Singh Vishwavidyalaya (Rewa), Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya (Jabalpur) and Mahatma Gandhi Gramoday Vishwavidyalaya (Chitrakoot) are also associated with the online catalogue of libraries.

Through this catalogue, participant universities will be connected online and get to know about book availability in particular library. There are many books in libraries, which can be viewed online, while few books can be called from particular universities.

RGPV Librarian Dr S S Chouksey said, there are many books unavailable in general libraries. Especially, research scholars face several issues to find out particular book. Chouksey said, through this online catalogue, they would be easily finding books to continue their reading and research.
There is also e-video in this catalogue, which provides lecture on several topics related to engineering, medicine, pharmacy, management, agriculture, law, etc. Students of participating university can search books by mentioning title, subject, writer or year. Dr Chouksey said, through the catalogue, one can gather information of number of books available in library of participating university. It is unified online library catalogue of books, theses and journals available in major university libraries in India.

The union database contains bibliographic description, location and holdings information for books, journals and theses in all subject areas available in more than 178 university libraries across the country. A web-based interface is designed to provide easy access to the merged catalogues. The IndCat is a major source of bibliographic information that can be used for inter-library loan, collections development as well as for copy cataloguing and retro-conversion of bibliographic records. The IndCat consists three components available in open access to users and librarians.

There are over 13 million bibliography records of books from 178 university libraries, doctoral thesis and subscribed journals by the universities and holding information on serials available in various university libraries. The catalogue has 83.17 lakh unique records of 173 universities.
