Measures to control pollution in Amarkantak gains momentum

MPPCB gears up to control pollution in Amarkantak. It has to be mentioned that subsequent to the intervention of Green Panel the district administration has done adequate measures to handle crowd turnout at the culmination ceremony of Narmada Sewa Yatra at Amarkantak on May 5.

It was stated that about 5 lakh people are expected to turn up at the event.The green panel has asked the collector to appear in person with his explanation earlier with a detail proposal for the management.

The green panel also sought status report on presence coliform bacteria in water .These directions were given during the hearing of a petition which was filed by a local resident Sanjiv Tiwari under application number 50/2015(CZ) accusing government of violating environmental norms on the banks of Narmada river near Amarkantak, the origin of river Narmada.The bench had earlier asked government about the number of guests attending the concluding ceremony, to which the government replied over 5 lakh people.PCB is also preparing status report on removal of encroachments, maintenance of minimum distance from the origin of river Narmada, plantation..It was argued that since culmination of Narmada seva yatra big crowd was and there would be high chances of water and air pollution .

It needs to be pointed out that CPCB ( Central Pollution Control Board) informed that in 11 locations from Amarkantak to Alirajpur E monitoring is being undertaken. Around 11 industries have been identified for pollution. Besides vegetation removed from Narmada river and its utilization plans have also been in pipeline.
