BSNL achieves milestone by making Nagpur as first ‘Digital District of India’

BHARAT Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Maharashtra Telecom Circle has achieved a milestone by making Nagpur the first ‘Digital District of India’ by way of connecting all the Gram Panchayats with optical fibre cables.

Furthermore, after a gap of nine years, BSNL Nagpur Circle has registered a net profit of Rs 25 crore and turnover of Rs 550 crore. To celebrate the achievement a programme was organised at CTO Compound, Civil Lines on Friday. Arun S Nimbalkar, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Zilla Parishad, Nagpur and Ankush Kedar, Additional CEO Zilla Parishad were the guests of honour. Namrata Tiwari, General Manager of BSNL Nagpur was also present on the occasion.

BSNL, Nagpur has contributed to making Nagpur the first ‘Digital District of India’ by connecting all the 776 Gram Panchayats with optical fibre cables has been highly appreciated by the BSNL Maharashtra Telecom Circle, Mumbai and BSNL Corporate Office, New Delhi.

About 1,700 kilometres of optical fibre cables was used to link up the Gram Panchayats. In addition BSNL, Nagpur has also utilised state-of-the-art network to wire up all the 71 Talathi offices and the work of wiring up all the Panchayat Samittee offices has also been initiated. BSNL has also set-up WiFi hotspots in all Tehsil offices.

A short film on the achievements of BSNL, Nagpur was shown to the audience. The guests Nimbalkar and Kedar felicitated the contractors by presenting certificate of appreciation for their immense support.

The employees of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Nagpur were also congratulated for their hard work and contribution in meeting the set targets. The optical fibre cables network is part of the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) mission, Digital India and Bharat Net movement initiated by the Government with an objective to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural India.

The optical fibre network would be the backbone infrastructure for making the country become fully digital.  T B Wankhede, Public Relations Officer of GMT, BSNL, Nagpur and employees in large numbers were present at the programme.
