THE prices of eggs in the wholesale market have increased due to scarce supply from various centres in the country. The blistering heat has resulted in the death of a large number of chickens which has hit the production of eggs. “Large hatcheries have been hit hard with a loss of production between 20 per cent and 30 per cent due to hot temperatures,” said Moiz Burhani of Vidarbha Eggs while talking to The Hitavada.

He has been in the wholesale egg business since more than 30 years. He said that the prices of eggs were being quoted at Rs 3.40 per egg as against Rs 2.80 per egg quoted in April 2017 at the wholesale egg market situated in Cotton Market. Looking at the heat wave, most traders expected the egg prices to further increase to Rs 3.75 per egg in wholesale by the end of May.

The eggs were brought to the wholesale market mostly from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Other egg-producing states were Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan. In Maharashtra, eggs are supplied in large quantities from Pune and Nanded to various places including Nagpur, he added.

During summer season, the average consumption of eggs in the city was between 5 lakh and 6 lakh eggs per day which normally was between 10 lakh and 12 lakh per day in winter season. “The winter season is considered to be the peak season where demand for eggs is at its highest and summer season is considered to be the slack season where demand is the lowest,” he said. Wholesale egg market caters to various places in Vidarbha and some parts of Madhya Pradesh.
