City timepiece market registers a turnover of Rs 1 crore per month

The age-old tradition of wearing a wrist watch appears to have not faded out with time despite the fact that a large number of electronic gadgets and applinces have been posing a cutthroat competition for it.
On the contrary settimng aside the new gadgets, people from all wlaks of life have been generating heavy demand different varieties of watches.


The craze for wrist watches and its other versions has increased that is what is reflecting from the turnout of the products at least here in the city. Taking into account the sale of the 12 major players dealing in different types of watches, the product has recorded a turnover of Rs 1 crore in May.


According to the dealers wall clocks are arriving here in the local markets from Murbi in Gujarat. There are more than 150 watch factories in Murbi. Some of the leading brands are Sinar, Solar, Optra, Avio, Ajanta, Oreav, Ricon, Lotus, Scientific and Saze among others.

Sushil Thakkar, treasurer of Nagpur Watch Dealers Association and one of the leading dealers of wall clock, while talking to The Hitavada said, “wall clock is not mere necessity but it has become a symbol of fashion. Peope, keep clocks in all the rooms including kitchen,” he said. Thakkar said that various attractive designs of clocks are available in the markets at reasonable prices ranging from Rs 150 to Rs 20,000 MRP.


“Tower clock - one of the customised variety of clocks is in demand now a days. Its price starts from Rs 25,000,” he said.
Thakkar further added that craze for ‘grand father’ clock or the longcase clock also exist.


Clocks of this variety are commonly 6 to 8 feet tall. He also said that the demand for digital clocks is limited to the offices and commercial use only. According to him the craze of Cuckoo locks which were mostly supplied by Kairos Hydrabad was also good and it came in the price range of Rs 8,500 to Rs 30,000. Even the corner table clock, double side clock, alarm clocks were also in good demand, Thakkar said.
