Kannur/Nagpur,

Tension prevailed in Payyanur town of Kannur district in Kerala on Tuesday as the workers of Communist Party of India (Marxist) allegedly set on fire the office of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the house of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) office-bearer.

According to RSS activists, several houses of RSS, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), BJYM workers and office-bearers were attacked by CPI-M. According to J Nanda Kumar, Akhil Bharatiya Sah-Prachar Pramukh of RSS and Convener of Pragya Pravah, CPI-M workers had held a programme in Payyanur on Tuesday to mark the death anniversary of CPI-M worker C V Dhanraj.

J Nanda Kumar alleged that CPI-M workers ransacked and set on fire RSS’ Payyanur district office, BJP circle office, and houses of Rajesh Kumar, Payyanur District Secretary of RSS; Arun Kumar, BJYM’s Kannur District President, and many others. Complaint was lodged in Payyanur. “Several houses of RSS, BJP, BJYM workers have been attacked. These targeted attacks come on the back of peace efforts by weekly ‘Organiser’ that were skipped by CPI-M,” he alleged.

Meanwhile, according to reports reaching here, when the RSS office in Payyanur was attacked allegedly by CPI-M workers, no one was inside it. Only a forensic examination will reveal if the office was set on fire or a petrol bomb was hurled. BJP has reportedly called called for a strike in Payyanur on Wednesday in protest of the incidents.

However, CPI-M workers alleged, BJP activists had hurled three country-made bombs at a motorcycle rally taken out by them at Payyanur on Tuesday evening, on first death anniversary of CPI-M worker Dhanraj.

Police said a few houses of workers belonging to both the parties -- BJP and CPI-M -- were attacked. Cops took some persons into custody in connection with the incidents. The situation is under control, they said.
