Rising pollution in Upper LakeHC notices to authorities

Dr Alankrita Mehra from Bhopal had filed applications before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding water, environment pollution and encroachment of Upper Lake

A BUNCH of petitions with in-reference suo motu regarding issues of protection of Bhopal lake (Bada Talab) from untreated sewage coming into it which increases level of water pollution, environment pollution, the division bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court comprising Chief Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice Vijay Kumar Shukla, on Tuesday, issued notices to the Secretary of Environment and Forest Department, New Delhi, Chairman, Central Pollution Control Board, New Delhi, Principal Secretary, Housing and Environment Department, Bhopal, Commissioner, Urban Administration and Development Department, Bhopal Commissioner, Bhopal Municipal Corporation, Chairman, of Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board, Bhopal, Director, Directorate of town and country planning Bhopal, Managing Director Madhya Pradesh State Tourism and Development Corporation, Bhopal, Director Environment Planning and Co-ordination Organisation, Bhopal and Collector of Bhopal asked them to file their reply before the court. The division bench has listed the matter for next hearing on August 28.

The division bench has heard the in-reference suo muto with nine other petitions referred by National Green Tribunal, after order passed by Supreme Court of India that the matter related to lakes should be heared by the High Courts and report before the Supreme Court. It may be recalled that, Dr Alankrita Mehra from Bhopal had filed applications before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding water pollution, environment pollution, encroachment of Bhopal lake, lake conservation etc but after order issued by SC, NGT referred this application before the High Court of MP. After hearing the division bench of the MPHC on Tuesday, issued notices to the respondents authorities.
