Presidential election is about ideology: Meira Kumar

Congress-led UPA’s Presidential candidate and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said that President’s election is a contest of ideology and she has written letter to all members of electoral collegiums to hear their inner voice and support her candidature.

Addressing a press conference at Congress headquarters in State capital, Meira Kumar said that it is wrong to equate the President’s election as Dalit versus Dalit. She rather underlined that it is a fight of ideology.

Going retrospective, she said that one important development took place in the scenario of national politics when 17 opposition parties held a meeting under the guidance of Sonia Gandhi and took two decisions. First decision was to fight President’s election on the basis of ideology and second was to select her as Presidential candidate. Talking about UPA policies, she said that “We ourselves introduced RTI for transparency. We want freedom of press. As of now, we are seeing that black clouds are hovering over it,” she told.

Moreover, she told that “We want to end caste system and contrary they are imposing ‘Manuwadi’ thinking and this is the reason that President election has been made as election of ideology.” She added that as of now, country is standing on a square and she urges the electorates to hear their conscience and support her. She told that once election was already held on the basis of inner voice and figures get’s changed. Turning down some questions, she told that no one else has the moral authority as much President enjoys.

President can do lot of things. On this occasion, Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh, State Congress President Arun Yadav and other Congress leaders were present. Later in the evening, Meira Kumar left Bhopal for New Delhi. Meira Kumar is fighting President election against NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind.
