NMC to opt for Central Government validation

Municipal Commr Mudgal’s efforts
bear fruits

What could be termed as great achievement for Nagpurians, the State Level team of Swachh Bharat Mission Cell has declared Nagpur as open defecation free (ODF) city.

The team of Health Department working under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal achieved this Herculean task by making continuos efforts.
Now, NMC will apply for validation from the Central Government for the Open Defecation free status. This status will be helpful in improving ranking in Swachh Bharat Survey conducted by the Central Government. In the recent survey, the city bagged a lowly 137 th position in the country in cleanliness.

The State Level Team recently visited Nagpur to inspect Open defection status of Nagpur to declare it as ODF city. The team consisting of Additional Commissioner of Amravati, CEO of Yavatmal, and one officer of Mantralaya and two-non official members paid a surprise visit to Nagpur between July 11-13 to take stock of open defecation status of the city. They visited different spots including railway track, Hazari Pahad, Sudam Nagari, Yashodhara Nagar, Chikhli, Shivangaon, and other places. They found only 5 persons defecating at open places in the outskirts of Nagpur. They were drivers and cleaners of transport company and hailed from Chhindwara, Raipur, Seoni and other places.

In last one year, the civic body has worked hard to provide individual toilets, community toilets and public toilets to the slum dwellers. The NMC has to provide 12,000 toilets to slum dwellers in the city. The local body had constructed 9,000 toilets while construction of remaining 2,500 toilets is in progress. The remaining 500 toilets have some disputes. After Mudgal took over the affairs of civic body, he aggressively worked to meet this impossible target. Commissioner Mudgal himself visited several spots during morning hours to discuss with people and to understand their problems. He sorted out their problems and directed them to use toilets. The NMC performed “Gandhigiri” at several places, playing drums and also garlanded the persons for not using toilets. This had a positive impact on the people and they agreed to use their toilets.

Municipal Commissioner while sharing this information said that the civic body will obtain validation from Quality Control of India (QCI) for ODF. The administration will propose a pledge to make city open defecation free in the schools, non- governmental organisations and by city fathers. The proposal will be tabled in the general body for its nod.

The nuisance detection squad will start functioning from next month to keep watch on slum dwellers for not using toilets. The civic body has provided toilets to individuals and also constructed public toilets, community toilets.
