Considering the nature of its diversified sectors, several hospitality businesses are opting for multi-location and multi-format strategies to boost operations. This has generated a world of opportunities for those with the requisite educational qualifications and varied core skills.
With this demand for employees on the rise, organisations are ensuring that they are attracting the best talent and are selecting individuals who are the right ‘fit for their distinct roles. It is this dynamism of the industry that creates possibilities and prospects: pre-entry and post-entry; thereby equipping human capital with immediate and potential employment across businesses and emerging/future trends.

Within the industry, every organisation integrates training programmes and offers internal career maps and progression pathways. This all-inclusive approach ensures a strategy for succession planning, enhanced employee engagement and a strengthened workforce.

The potential within this market is being realised by educational institutions. There are options ranging from short-term courses to skills certifications, graduate and post-graduate programmes. While focusing on the core curriculum is integral to student learning, it is equally important to embed employability skills across the components of the curriculum. To accelerate this professional development, an experiential learning environment (hands-on-approach through projects, research, internships) would serve as a value-add. Continual academia -industry interface would also propel accurate perceptions of their professional ambitions. I believe that, as an educator, we need to create trained professionals who understand the complexity of business operations. These could be through bridge-programmes, or education to career progression or career cluster-role development that focuses on broader skills acquisition, within an employment setting.

We should devise ways that support and develop not just knowledge and skills, but also value that enable individuals to contribute, as informed citizens, both locally and globally. Therefore, those who possess specialist skills, 21st century life skills and have a passion to deliver exceptional guest service will prove to be more powerful than ever. All these improvements or change interventions would create a positive culture, within businesses and deliver brand differentiators to the sectors within the industry Education must awaken the leadership traits, enhance self-awareness, cultivate an entrepreneurial spirit in this world of incredible opportunities and empower each towards building capacity to make a difference to the community.
