Beat Uzbekistan 92-76 in their tournament opener

HOSTS India, ranked 40th in the world, beat 58th ranked Uzbekistan 92-76 in their B division match of the FIBA Asia Women’s Basketball Cup that got under way at the Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru, on Sunday.
Veteran Anita converted 6 out of her 7 three attempts to emerge top scorer with 28 points. She scored 18 of her total points in the first half to give the side a comfortable lead 43-30.

Newly appointed Serb coach Zoran Visic wisely used her in patches and she too responded well by scoring her three pointers whenever needed.
The coach fully utilised the bench by giving much needed rest to all the players.
He put 6’11” tall Poonam Chaturvedi, the tallest player of the tournament, in the third quarter and she immediately responded by converting an under basket.

She used her height well to score two more baskets to increase the lead to 69-53 at the end of the third quarter.
Anita too chipped in 8 points in this quarter. Tall and well-built opponents tried their best to stop Anita but were helpless as she scored from all angles of the court.
The winners hung on to the lead in the last quarter to emerge worthy winners.

The hosts still have to work on their defence if they are dreaming of winning the B division title. They conceded 20 offensive rebounds and this may prove them costly in close matches.
India will play their last group match against lowly placed Sri Lanka on Tuesday after Monday’s rest day.

Earlier in A division matches, holders Japan thrashed Philippines 106-55, strong contenders Australia beat Korea 74-58 and in a thrilling encounter Chinese Taipei pipped DPR of Korea 77-76.
