Rajghat area of Badwani is coming under the submergence of Sardar Sarovar dam and July 31 is the last date of rehabilitation

Amid heavy protest from Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar and local people, Badwani district administration dug out the mortal remains of Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Bhai Desai from Samadhi situated at Rajghat in Badwani and shifted to rehabilitation site on Thursday. This work was done as Rajghat area of Badwani is coming under the submergence of Sardar Sarovar dam and July 31 is the last date of rehabilitation.

Talking to ‘The Hitavada’, Badwani Collector Tejaswani Nayak told that the Samadhi, that contains mortal remains of Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi, was situated at Rajghat. Help of JCB machine was taken to dig out the stone cube that contains mortal remains of Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi.

The shifting work of mortal remains was started in ‘Brahma Muhurt’.
When the work was in progress, social activist Medha Patkar came and stopped the work. “We could have carried out the work with force but we preferred to have a dialogue. SDM had spoken to her and left the mortal remains at the site. Later, Medha Patkar said she is in favour of shifting of mortal remains and necessary arrangements should be done by administration in this regard. When at 12 noon, SDM went to have a word with her, by that time, she had started the dharna,” said Tejaswani Nayak.

Later, mortal remains were relocated to Khukra rehabilitation site in Badwani. Now, Badwani people will decide where to construct the Samadhi. He said that one committee was formed for Rajghat issue. He also said that as far as protest is concerned then cases have been filed by police against the protesters.

In the meantime, politics has come on boil over the shifting of mortal remains of Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi from Rajghat in Badwani. State Congress President Arun Yadav said that the manner in which ‘Samadhi’ in Rajghat was dismantled is a shameful incident for entire nation.

He claimed that Badwani administration reached at Samadhi site during dawn and before people could wake up from their slumber, administration took out mortal remains of Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Bhai Desai. He informed that it was in 1965 that a Gandhian, Kashinath Trivedi, brought the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Bhai to Badwani.

He alleged that JCB through which mortal remains of all three great persons were being taken was filthy and it is an insult to Father of the Nation. Congress has decided to stage dharna against the incident.
