Show willingness to ensure water for every farm under PMKSY: Brijmohan Agrawal

Chhattisgarh Water Irrigation Minister gives presentation on ‘Abhiyaan Jal Bhagirathi’ at Jal Manthan

Water Resources Minister Brijmohan Agrawal today said that state governments should willingly work towards realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of doubling farmer income and ensuring water for every farm in the country. He was addressing ‘Jal Manthan’ programme organised by Union Ministry of Water Resources and River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. The programme was inaugurated by Union Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Uma Bharti.

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Vijay Goel, Union Minister of State Sanjeev Kumar Balyan and Punjab Irrigation Minister Rana Gurjeet Singh were present at the occasion.


Brijmohan Agrawal said that ‘Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojna’ is the only scheme in India which has been formulated and implemented in a very less time. The objective of this scheme is to bring a change in the irrigation scenario and ensure water for every farm in the country so that the income of farmer gets doubled. He appreciated Maharashtra and Odisha’s effort towards speedy implementation of this scheme and said that every state has worked hard in formulating the scheme.

He added that a target has been set under PMKSY to complete 99 irrigation schemes in the country and funds for the same have been made available to states. He said it is now the state’s responsibility to show readiness in completing these schemes. Water Resources Secretaries and senior officials of all states were present at the ‘Jal Manthan’.


Speaking at the seminar Chhattisgarh WRD Secretary Ganesh Shankar Mishra said keeping in view the objective of growing more crop from every drop of water and doubling farmers’ income of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Water Resources Department of Chhattisgarh has taken up an ambitious target of providing cent percent irrigation facilities to farmers through Abhiyaan Laksha Bhagirathi scheme.


In the presentation, Mishra informed that in pursuing the goal of completing the target of pending irrigation schemes under the Prime Minister’s Agricultural Irrigation Scheme, Chhattisgarh has prepared a work plan under the said scheme and by 2028, the ambitious goal of achieving cent percent irrigation facilities in the state will be fulfilled. Presently 34 percent agriculture lands are covered with irrigation facilities and in order to achieve the cent percent target, every year a target has been fixed to irrigate 1 lakh hectare land. The scheme which was launched in 2016, in the first year itself, a target of over one lakh hectare has been achieved.

Under the campaign 106 irrigation schemes have been completed. This campaign has increased irrigation capacity by almost two percent, while it has been 0.68 percent in the previous year. He said that the speed at which the Bhagirathi scheme is being implemented in Chhattisgarh, we have full faith that we will find our goal in due course.
