Business Bureau,

To press for for their long-pending demands, the general insurance agents have called a nation-wide strike on Friday. The agents will observes ‘no business’ day on the occasion and will not issue any general insurance policy.
About 20,000 general insurance agents across the country including over 3,000 agents in the district will stage demonstrations at various places under the banner All India General Insurance Agents Association.

Rupesh Pannase, Nagpur District President of the association, told The Hitavada that the agents attached to all the four general insurance companies will participate in the agitation.
“Demonstrations will be held at all the branches in the city at 10.00 AM and no one will facilitate issuance of policy. We will not even participate in the process of policy renewal on Friday,” he said. Later on at 3.00 PM, all the agents will gather at Samvidhan Chowk wherein Sunil Ramteke, Maharashtra State president of the association will address the agents.

Though it will be a one-day strike, the agents threatened to intensify the protest in coming days if the policy makers fails to the resolve their issues.
Commenting on the demands, Pannase said the agents want commission on the entire value of the policies. “Till 2004, we used to get commission on the total amount of the policies. But then the governmnet made policy changes and we started receiving commission on only one fourth value of the policies. It is causing huge financial loss to the agents,” he said.

The general insurance agents are also demanding various facilities similar to those offered to their counterparts engaged in life insurance sector. “Facilities like gratuity, pension and other benefits are available for life insurance agents but we are deprived of it despite of the fact that we are also contributing equally in the sector,” he said.
Similarly, the agents want the authorities not to promote
vehicle dealers as general insurance agents.
