Assam Governor asks people to pledge to form a new India

GUWAHATI,

ASSAM Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Wednesday advocated the need of a pledge for building a new India which will be clean and free from poverty, corruption, terrorism, communalism and casteism.


Speaking at a function held to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Quit India Movement in Rangia, Mr Purohit said, “Inspired by the call of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, lakhs of people spontaneously came out and took a pledge on August 9, 1942 to free our country from the shackles of Brtish Rule.”


“The Independent India that we have today is the manifestation of the supreme sacrifices of our country men and the resistance that Quit India Movement created against the foreign rule,” he said. Taking a bow to countless martyrs like Mangal Pandey, Bhagat Singh, Rani Laxmi Bai, Kanaklata Baruah, Piyali Phukan, Maniran Dewan etc, Governor Purohit said their supreme sacrifice had earned our country the freedom. Underlining the role of Mahatma Gandhi who led the freedom movement from the front, he said Gandhiji, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Ram Prasad Bismil had suffered intense torment for the cause of freedom and they gave their every bit for the country and the countrymen.


Urging the present generation to take cues from the supreme sacrifices of the freedom fighters, he said, “After we earned freedom from the Britishraj, we need to work resolutely to enjoy freedom from poverty, corruption, terrorism, communalism and casteism.”
