Nanda Jichkar, Mayor, directed the officials concerned to stop immersion of idols in Sakkardara and Sonegaon lakes. Besides, she said, the administration should conduct proper study and stop immersion of idols in two more lakes this year.

Jichkar was addressing a meeting of officials of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and representatives of voluntary organisations, at NMC office here on Friday ahead of Ganeshhotsav. “The NMC movement of eco-friendly Ganeshotsav to prevent pollution of water bodies is gaining popularity across the State and the country. It is changing the mindset of the people. Let us all carry forward the wonderful initiative,” she said.

Deepraj Pardikar, Deputy Mayor; Sandip Joshi, Ruling Party Leader; Ashwin Mudgal, Municipal Commissioner; Manoj Chaple, Chairman of Health Committee; Divya Dhurde, BJP Whip in NMC; Ravindra Kumbhare, Additional Municipal Commissioner; Jayant Dandegaonkar, Additional Deputy Municipal Commissioner; Dr Pradeep Dasarwar, Health Officer (Sanitation), and representatives of voluntary organisations were present in the meeting.

Speaking in the meeting, Mayor said that the number of artificial ponds for immersion of idols and pots to collect used pooja material (nirmalya) would be increased this year. The people also should co-operate and immerse the idols in artificial ponds, and help NMC in the cause of preventing pollution of water bodies. The volunteers working for creating awareness at the sites of idol immersion will get identity cards and t-shirts from NMC. For the purpose, the voluntary organisations should furnish the names of their volunteers to Health Department of NMC.

Sandip Joshi said that NMC was working towards the goal of ensuring that no idol would be immersed in any of the water bodies in the city. Further, next year, NMC will appeal to the Ganeshotsav mandals to install smaller metal idols of Lord Ganesh, keep those permanently with them, and a smaller clay idol should be used every year for ritual of immersion. A provision will be made in NMC’s budget for the next year to give incentive to the mandals responding to this appeal, he added.

Municipal Commissioner appealed to the people to co-operate with the administration. Others also spoke on the occasion. Dr Dasarwar briefed the meeting about preparations on part of NMC Health Department. Kaustav Chatterjee of Green Vigil Foundation appreciated the efforts of NMC officials and employees working tirelessly during Ganeshotsav and festive season. It was decided to give a certificate of appreciation to mandals that immerse the idols in artificial tanks.
