In today’s world of technological and knowledge explosion we deal with huge data. To remember and recall the data is not so easy. Memory techniques are very important as the students have to remember and recall huge amount of data on a daily basis. Formulating and practising mnemonic devises are very helpful for the students.

Mnemonic is derived from a Geek word mnemonikos meaning aiding memory. We can memorise any subject by using different kinds of mnemonic. It can be a song, rhyme, acronym, image etc. Whether it’s Chemistry or Physics Or Mathematics, the mnemonics can be developed from the lesson. Visualisation or remembering the lessons through images help in the subjects like History.

We are familiar with VIBGYOR –The colours of the spectrum. Similarly the mnemonic help us to remember the order of the planets. The advantage of mnemonics is that it can be used by students of all ages. This helps to study more effectively and efficiently and saves time. These are not only the study tools but also help in our everyday life.

Various Mnemonics
KEYWORD: Suppose we want to memorise 10-12 points for an essay, this can be easily done by understanding all the points and then we can make a meaningful key word out of the first letter of all the points. Whenever we require to recall the points, the keyword will help us to write all the points
Grouping and Connectors: If we want to remember many numbers , grouping of numbers or connecters will help. For example 7,0,6,8,3,2,1,4,5 can be remembered as 123,456,07
Model Mnemonics: Like pie chart, graph, Mapping of points- It is one of the efficient method of recalling. A lesson consists of too many points and key words can be recalled easily through perfect mapping, branching and making the models.
Image Mnemonic: This is to visualise an image associated withthe lesson. This is one of the effective tool
While reading the lesson if the student visualise appropriate images, it can be effectively recalled when he write it. As soon as the image flashes, he will be able to recall the points.

ACRONYM: Making a new word by selecting the first letter of the words to remember easily. For ex If we want to remember three words like nail, plywood and antifreeze, it can be easily remembered as PAN.
This method can be used for big data also. Many pages consisting of too many points and explanations can be easily remembered by making a keyword/acronym from the important points. As soon as the student write the keyword ,the entire points/explanation can be recalled quickly.
Mnemonic devices can be developed by the teachers or the student during the course of study. It can be developed for all subjects. Teacher can develop it while teaching.

Some Math Mnemonics-
Remembering Numerator is always above denominator, students can remember it as new dress or nice dog or any word which can be developed in this way.
To remember the number of digits in PI 3.1415926,we can think of the number of letters in the word and can develop something like this
May(3)I(1) HAVE(4) A(1) LARGE(5) CONTAINER(9)OF (2) COFFEE. Irrespective of the subject and difficulty level, these types of mnemonic can be developed.
Memory devices are not only great study tools, but they’re also very useful for everyday life.
To remember multiplication table is difficult for kids. This can be easily and interestingly studied through mnemonic-

One ex for table of 9
Table of 9 can be done by using one’s fingers.Begin by holding out both hands with all fingers stretched out. Now count left to right the number of fingers that indicates the multiple .To figure 9x4,count four fingers from left ending at your left hand index finger. Bend this finger down and count the remaining fingers. Fingers to the left of bend fingers represent tens, fingers to the right are ones. There are three fingers to the left and six to the right which shows 9x4=36. This way the entire table can be done using 10 fingers.

Educators can create their mnemonic tools while teaching. It should be simple and effective. A teacher should know when and where it should be used for maximum benefit for th students. A creative teacher can trigger the thinking process of students to make interesting mnemonic while teaching the topic. An effective use of mnemonic based teaching will boost the confidence and memory power of the students.
