CHENNAI/PUDUCHERRY,

UPSET over the merger of rival factions of AIADMK, 19 MLAs loyal to sidelined party supremo V K Sasikala and her nephew TTV Dhinakaran on Tuesday withdrew support to Chief Minister K. Palaniswami, reducing the Government to a minority, prompting Opposition DMK to demand a floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Nineteen legislators belonging to the Dhinakaran faction met the Governor on Tuesday at Raj Bhavan.
“We have informed the Governor that we don’t have confidence in the Chief Minister,” Dhinakaran’s supporter and Andipatti MLA Thanga Tamil Selvan said after the meeting.

A source said all of them would now shift to Bengaluru or Puducherry to avoid poaching by the major AIADMK factions.
Chief Minister Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister Panneerselvam went into a huddle after the Dhinakaran group met the Governor. Details of their meeting or what they plan to do to counter the threat to the Government were not immediately known.

In the 234-member Assembly, the AIADMK has 134 MLAs, excluding the Speaker. Late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s
RK Nagar constituency is still vacant.

The DMK has 89 seats followed by its allies Congress eight and IUML one.
Seeking to fish in troubled waters, principal Opposition party DMK shot off a letter to the Governor demanding that the Assembly be convened and Palaniswami directed to prove his majority.
