Inflation appears to have mounting pressure on people gearing up for the Ganesh festival which is considered as one of the biggest events in this part of the world. As majority of households in the city install Lord Ganesh idol, there is huge demand for decorative items, flowers, lighting, sweets and even grocery well before the actual 10-festival begins.

However, with prices of the many commodities flying high, traders are not happy as customers footfalls have dropped remarkably.

“With Rakhi, Janmastami and Ganesh Chaturthi falling in the same month of August, many people have squeezed their budget for the 10-day mega event,” Vasant Sahu, a grocery shop owner told The Hitavada on Thursday.

Prakash Tadse, maker of thermacol arches and household decoration items said, “Last year the response was so good that I had to stop taking orders for the clients. But in the present season, things have dramatically changed. I have very few orders. When I contacted my regular clients, most of them replied that due to less budget, they have dropped the idea of spending more on decoration.”

Chandrakant Bhimare, a tent house owner said, “In am not receiving enough orders for pendals and it seems that my earning will dip significantly in this festival season.” People are shying away because of the increased prices.

Narendra Patne, an employee of an IT company which celebrate the festival in a grand way, said, “We have to squeeze our budget this festival. Till last year, we used to spent lavishly during the festival. This season because of the higher prices of various items, we have to cut short the budget. For buying Ganesh idol this year, we have to shell out Rs 800 as against the price of Rs 500 in the previous year. We are compelled to do cost cutting this year.”

Vitthal Bhoyar, a idol seller said, “Prices have gone up because the artisans have been demanding more. So retailers have to pass on the burden of inflated prices to the buyers. Even the cost of pendal, license fee and other expenses are pushing up the expenditure. Moreover, street norms imposed on the idol seller by the civic authorities and various other restrictions have also added to the cost in the present season. Hence, the idols are costly by about 40 per cent
this year.”
