Staff Reporter,

Dr Raviprakash Dani, the Vice Chancellor of Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapith (PDKV), Akola who was sacked by Governor and Chancellor of universities Ch Vidyasagar Rao on Saturday over dual citizenship issue, has challenged his termination days before expiry of his term before the High Court. Dr Dani, while terming his unceremonious removal as unfair and arbitrary, has questioned the decision of Chancellor to remove him.

According to the Chancellor’s office, the decision to remove Dr Dani from the post of Vice-Chancellor was taken after obtaining the opinion of the Law and Judiciary Department of Government of Maharashtra, the Advocate General of Maharashtra and the Ministry of External Affairs. The timing of removal surprised many as Dr Dani was about to complete the term and a search committee was already formed to select his successor.

After pondering over the issue and consulting his lawyers, Dr Dani has finally moved the High Court with a request to quash and set-aside the impugned order dated July 29. The petitioner has joined the Chancellor, Principal Secretary of Agriculture and Registrar of the PDKV as party-respondent.

The matter is likely to come up before the main division bench consisting of Justice Bhushan Dharmadhikari and Justice Rohit Deo on Friday.

According to petitioner-Dr Raviprakash Dani, he was duly selected by a search committee headed by ex-judge of the Supreme Court and he had truthfully stated all the facts before the committee.

All details about his nationality and educational qualifications were duly scrutinised by the committee, Government and its agencies, he stated while wondering as to why he was penalised for something which he never suppressed.

Dr Dani who holds a Ph D in genetics from the Indian Agriculture Research Institute, New Delhi had also served as a principal scientist at the Central Institute for Cotton Research (CICR) in Nagpur. Later, he was transferred to Hisar and thereafter he got a prestigious assignment at United States.
