Staff Reporter,

Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) has taken cognizance of the incident at school in Ashok Nagar district, where tribal children in Gram Chiroli complained of getting contaminated food in mid-day meal. It was reported that when they approached the authorities, they got warning and abuses.

The children also complained to Collector at Ashok Nagar during public hearing. This food is being distributed at primary school, Navin Medical School, Anganwadi. MPHRC panel has asked for detailed report from Collector Ashok Nagar over the incident. The meal served to children was not at all fit for consumption and inspite of repetitive complaints done by tribal children, no action was taken by the authorities.

Even after stringent recommendations set by Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC), mid-day meal fiasco cases are getting reported from Anganwadi centres in the State. It has to be mentioned that recommendations were set last year in the month of June by MPHRC to streamline functioning of Anganwadi centres in State. Last year, more than 50 students fell sick after consuming their mid-day meals at a Government school in Chhatarpur District.

The strategy to increase number of Anganwadi centres in State has been developed, but unfortunately, monitoring of these centres is yet to happen at regular intervals. In a bid to check the status of Anganwadi centres, MPHRC probe team inspected Bhopal, Raisen, Sehore and other districts in State. It was found that there is no specific timing for Anganwadi centres and no punctuality is being followed. There is no proper toilet facility. There is no adequate space to accommodate children. The meals and breakfast are not being served as per pre-decided menu.

In Sehore Anganwadi, in six centres, there was no community hall. For the last six years, there is no proper place to accommodate children or organise any social and cultural activities. Mid-day meal was not being served, which is increasing the problem of the centre. This situation is also being noticed in schools and Anganwadi at Bhopal and Raisen.
