Booty worth Rs 19.50 lakh stolen from house in Shanti Nagar

In a daring day-light burglary, gold ornaments and cash collectively worth Rs 19.50 lakh were stolen from a house of an MSEB contractor in Shanti Nagar on Sunday.


According to police, the theft took place at residence of Mohd Iliyas Kamani, Plot No. C-21, Mahesh Nagar, under jurisdiction of Shanti Nagar Police Station. He had gone to Mumbai for personnel work while his family members including wife and children had gone to attend a function in the same locality at 1.30 pm. When Iliyas’s wife and children returned home they found the broken latch of the front door. This was at 4.30 pm and they rushed inside with varied thoughts going through their minds.


After entering the home, she found the almirah wide open and gold ornaments and cash missing from it. The information of the theft was given to the police. Staff of Shanti Nagar Police Station and team of Crime Branch rushed to the spot.
A police officer informed that the theft took place when the family went out. The thief scaled the boundary wall of the house and broke the latch by using screw driver and a hammer.


The accused found keys of almirah above it and hence did not had any trouble in opening it. The thief then cut open the internal drivers of the almirah and walked away with gold ornaments (600 gms) and Rs 1.5 lakh cash, the officer said. Marriage of Moh Iliyas’ daughter is scheduled in November and hence the gold ornaments were purchase for the same, it was learnt.


A sniffer dog was pressed into service and fingerprints were lifted from the scene. Senior police officials including ACP Crime Somnath Waghchoure visited the spot and directed police teams to check the location of history-sheeter thieves of the area. Shanti Nagar police have registered the case under Sections 379 of the Indian Penal Code.
