Cops striving for ‘Drugs-free Nagpur’

In 2017, drug-peddling cases register 191% rise in the Second Capital of Maharashtra

With an aim to make Nagpur a drugs-free city, the top brass of city police have strengthened the vigil and raids on shady establishment as there are inputs that youngsters are falling prey to it. Along with Anti-Narcotics Cell, other units of city police have been asked to gather inputs of drug rackets operating in the city. The police have decided to book drug consumers along with the drug peddlers so that the drug users would directly feel the heat of the police action.

In first eight months of 2017, the cops have registered 128 cases of drug peddling with jump of 191% as compared to 12 months statistics of year 2016. Only 44 cases of drug peddling were registered in the previous year.

A senior police officer said that the cops have narrowed down on many drug peddlers in the last three months and also checking status of the drug peddlers arrested in the last three years.

Despite many actions against the drug peddlers in the city, the anti-narcotics cell have not yet busted suppliers who are running the show from Mumbai and Delhi.
If sources are to be believed, Nigerian nationals are supplying cocaine to Nagpur from Mumbai. Also, the Anti-Narcotics Cell had stumbled upon Kashmir connection in the cocaine case two months ago.

Inform us if your ward gets addicted to drugs: DCP Sambhaji Kadam Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sambhaji Kadam informed that all units of Crime Branch along Anti-Narcotics Cell have been asked to keep vigil at schools and colleges and restaurants. “We have noticed the trend that youngsters from high-profile families are involved in drugs abuses,” he said. “We are also studying profile of accused involved in last several year cases.
