By pooja dhaktod lanjewar,

Once in my classroom, I gave a distinct task to my management students. They were given a blank paper and 15 minutes of time and were asked to do anything they can with this piece of paper in 15 minutes. The only condition kept was, “Whatever” they make out of it should be saleable in the market or at least of economic value (the market was kept virtual and not an actual one).
To my surprise all came up with diverse things and great ideas.

Some wrote beautiful poems and jokes, some made airplanes, boats, striking drawings, envelopes, several gave their signature as autographs with charming smiley on it, some changed it to a news paper, a few to my surprise crumbled the paper and said the scrap is also saleable these days and many more such things.

Only one student gave back a blank paper with his signature on it, stating that “it is a blank cheque madam which can and will buy all of the things the other students made from the paper. I will resell all”.
He was the buyer and eventually a reseller in that virtual market of ours. He thought differently from the others. In other words out of the box.
That student was the only in the class who thought of reselling. That student sounded different and acted different from the rest of the class.

It doesn’t mean that he won and others lost, but it showed that how an individual, a brain, a mind, a thought can be formed and how the imagination can vary from person to person. It showed that a person can be creative, think different and look distinct in the mass.

Thinking out of the box is looking beyond the boundaries, beyond the horizon. While creativity is a phenomenon whereby somewhat new and somehow valuable is created, such as an idea, a scientific theory, an invention, a literary work, a painting, a musical composition, a joke, etc.

Thinking out of the box and being creative constantly facilitates success and satisfaction. It may be at home, at work, amongst friends and family in this world and in the universe, a creative person is always a step ahead of those who just go off by the set thumb rules. The former develops as a leader and the rest stays as followers.

Recently, I started following a dance show on a popular television channel featuring Remo D’Souza as the Judge which showed the talented dancers who performed beyond imagination. They were amazing, but have you ever thought and noticed how creative and imaginative the choreographers become and how they use different techniques, props and themes to demonstrate their act. This was just an example but this shows, yes brains are working magnificently.

Being creative and thinking beyond the boundaries is not easy. One has to be bold enough and has to trust oneself for such a move. Creative thinking requires an inquisitive mind.
Thinking Out of the box requires three steps
l Challenging your assumptions
l Stepping out of your shoes
l Leaving your comfort zone
Brains that are willing to follow these three steps assure that the future rests in their hands.

Challenge your assumptions
One has to challenge their own assumptions their own beliefs. Without asking why, what, if about a situation or a factor nobody can reach to a defined and correct way out. A person’s cerebral ability increases by asking infinite number of questions and then penetrating for the solutions to it through numerous assumptions.

Rabindranath Tagore has rightly quoted: “If I can't make it through one door, I'll go through another door, or I'll make a door. Something terrific will come”.
Very true and appropriate.

Step out of your shoe
Stepping out of your shoe and into someone’s shoe can make you think in a different way. Creative thinkers always think about the circumstances or a problem from a different angle. It is not easy neither it is difficult but yes, it’s different.

Why you feel good when a TV commercial or a newspaper ad connects with you? It is because it has been made keeping you and people like you in consideration.
Even Albert Einstein told the world that we do not need to think more, we need to think differently.

Leave your comfort zone
Ultimately, leaving your comfort zone. To be creative, let your mind reach the pinnacle, stretch yourself and leave your comfort. Once we get rid of the conventional thumb rule thinking, the actual process of thinking starts.
It’s never too late to be different.

Larry Ellison of Oracle has said
“The only way to get ahead is to find errors in conventional wisdom”.
Being “in the box” limits our ability to reach our full potential and an “out of the box” approach can be a unique professional development. It helps in optimising one’s performance.

Why students and Professionals benefit from being creative and thinking outside the box?
1.They can easily stand out from crowd
2. Great solutions great pays
3. More learning, sometimes though through a hard way
4. No hangs of the so called comfort zones
5. High chances of becoming a leader
6. Generation of abundant possibilities
And many more such benefits
“One needs to look at the situation with new eyes”.
Many discoveries prove this statement correct. For example when Pythagoras in the 6th century BC declared that world was round; many Greek philosophers disagreed until in 330BC Aristotle championed the idea of a complete round earth. There are numerous such examples, which proves the above statement.
So think, think wisely, think effectively, think efficiently and think distinctively
Be creative stay creative!
