Twelve children fall ill after consuming chocolates in Bilaspur

Sensation prevailed in village Khamtarai located on the outskirts of city last evening when about a dozen of children fell ill after taking chocolates given to them by an unknown person. Minutes after eating the chocolates, the children started vomiting and lost their sense.

All the children have been admitted to the hospital where the condition of two is serious. After the incident, all senior administrative and police officials rushed to the hospital and interacted with the parents. Sarkanda Police under whose jurisdiction the area comes have registered an offence and started investigations.

According to information the incident took place last evening when few children of Khamtarai village were playing near a Ganesh Puja Pandal. Meanwhile two people along with a child came in a car and started distributing chocolates among the children telling that it was Prasad of the popular deity.  After distributing the chocolates, they left the place.  However, few children did not take the chocolates and kept them in their pockets. Sources said that few minutes after taking the chocolates, the children started vomiting and were feeling uneasy.

They however managed to reach their house and lost their senses. The matter came to light after few hours when their parents who are mostly laborers, returned back home from work and found the children sleeping. Despite several attempts when the children did not get up, they inquired from the neighbors whose children also fainted during the same period. The news spread like wild fire in the village and immediately the affected families took their children to the hospital where the doctors after administering primary treatment referred them to Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS).

Those children who did not take the children said that two people along with a child came on a car when they were playing near the Ganesh Puja Pandal. They said that they did not take the chocolates as they were not willing to. But others took the chocolates and started vomiting after few minutes. Later they returned home where they fainted.

Instantly after information District Collector P Dayanand, Deputy Collector K D Kunjam, Superintendent of Police Mayank Shrivastava, Additional Police Superintendent Neeraj Chandrakar and other Police and administrative officers rushed to CIMS to take stock of the situation. The authorities discussed with the doctors on the issue and gave necessary instructions to them. Collector P Dayanand strictly instructed the doctors and other hospital staff to take the matter seriously and extend best medical supports to the children. He also asked CIMS management to keep him updated about the condition of the children. Both the Collector and Police Superintendent also interacted with the parents of the children and assured that all possible supports would be extended to them besides better treatment to the children.

Mayank Shrivastaava said that it was a serious matter and he has deployed additional staff in the hospital to record statements of the victims after they recovers taking permission from the doctors. Sarkanda Police have registered an offence against the culprits and started investigations. So far no arrest has been made.
