63 Army personnel honoured for valour

Southern Command’s investiture ceremony was held at Dronachal Top in Bhopal on Thursday morning. Lieutenant General P M Hariz, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Command, felicitated as many as 63 Officers, Junior Commissioned Officer and other ranks with Gallantry and Distinguished Service Medals.
The medals were given to the recipient in recognition of their various acts of gallantry as well as for exceptional devotion to duty and service to nation.

A total of 24 Sena Medals (Gallantry), 6 Yudh Seva Medals, 14 Sena Medals (Distinguished), 18 Vishisht Seva Medals and four Bar to Vishisht Seva Medals were presented in the ceremony.

Three officers and four other ranks were conferred with gallantry awards posthumously. Army Commander also bestowed Unit Citation to 19 units of Southern Command for their meritorious and outstanding performance. The ceremony was organised by Sudharshan Chakra Corps headed by Lieutenant General IS Ghuman and graced by a host of civil and military dignitaries, distinguished guests and family members of martyrs.

The felicitation ceremony included presentation of gallantry awards to next of kins of awardees who made supreme sacrifice beyond the call of duty. Late Sepoy Rama Moorthy and Hav Elumalai M displayed extreme grit and nerves of steel when they kept guiding the rescue teams while they were themselves buried 35 feet under snow after being swept away by an avalanche in the Siachen Glacier. Likewise, Lieutenant Colonel R S Pawar and Major Krishnan Manoj Kumar laid down their lives while trying to contain the fire at Central Ammunition Depot, Pulgaon. Major Tahir Hussain Khan made the supreme sacrifice for the nation while flying the Dhruv helicopter and successfully inducting troops to a critical location before the helicopter crashed due to extremely difficult weather conditions.

In his address, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Command, Lieutenant General P M Hariz congratulated the awardees and recipients of unit citations and exhorted all ranks to emulate the awardees and give their best to make the nation proud of the Indian Army. Yudh Seva Medal was given to Lieutenant General Nagesh P Rao, SM (Parachute Regiment), Brigadier Harjeet Singh Sahi, SM (Rajputana Rifles), Brigadier Govind Kalwad (Maratha Light Infantry), Colonel Amitabh Walawalkar (Parachute Regiment), Colonel Gagandeep Singh (The Brigade of Guards) and Colonel Subhanjan Chatterjee (Bihar Regiment).

The recipients of Sena Medal (Gallantry) are Lieutenant Colonel Ranjit Singh Pawar (Posthumous) of Army Ordnance Corps, Major Krishnan Manoj Kumar (Posthumous) of Army Ordnance Corps, Major Taher Hussain Khan (Posthumous) of Army Aviation Corps, Havildar Elumalai M (Posthumous) of Madras Regiment, Naik Vijayakumar S (Posthumous) of Gorkha Rifles, Sepoy Rama Moorthy N (posthumous) of Madras Regiment, Major Yende Raghavendra Kumar (Corps of Engineers), Major Maneet Kumar Pant (Parachute Regiment), Major Chandan Singh (Grenadiers), Major Amit Yadav (Jat Regiment), Major Arjun Galoth (Parachute Regiment), Major Ajay Kumar Pandita (Electronics and Mechanical Engineers), Major Munish Gujjar (Rajputana Rifles), Major Rohtas Singh (Armoured Corps), Major Gaurav Grewal (Electronics & Mechanical Engineers), Major Ajay Singh Rautela (Gorkha Rifles), Major Vineet Phogat (The Brigade of Guards), Major Sandeep Singh Pathania (Dogra Regiment), Captain Rahul Solanki (Corps of Signals), Naib Subedar Chhatra Bahadur Phakami (Gorkha Rifles), Havaldar Jitendra Kumar (Parachute Regiment), Lance Naik Narayan Shrestra (Gorkha Rifles) and Lance Naik Harmesh Singh (The Brigade of Guards). Apart from this, Sena Medal (Distinguished) was given to Lieutenant General Rakesh Kumar Anand, VSM (Corps of Signals), Major General (retired) Praveen Dixit, VSM, (Armoured Corps), Major General Indupuru Narayana, VSM, (Regiment of Artillery), Major General Anil Puri, VSM (Corps of Engineers), Brigadier Sanjay Kumar Vidyarthi (Corps of Engineers), Colonel Giridhar Dhondiram Kole (Garhwal Rifles), Colonel Dalwinder Singh Atwal (Corps of Engineers), Colonel SS Kamatnurkar (Assam Rifles), Colonel Yogesh Kumar Bisht (Punjab Regiment), Colonel Sonendra Singh (Corps of Engineers), Colonel Raghudeep Minhas (Corps of Engineers), Colonel Gaurav Jain (Regiment of Artillery), Colonel Paramjeet Singh Cheema, VSM (Bihar Regiment), Major Kuldeep Singh, VSM (Corps of Engineers).

Bar to Vishist Seva Medal was given to Lieutenant General Taranjit Singh, VSM, Armoured Corps, Major General (retired) Praveen Dixit, VSM, Armoured Corps, Major General Rajiv Edwards, VSM, Armoured Corps and Major General Deepak Kalra, VSM, Army Medical Corps.
