2,337 GPs in Vidarbha to go to polls in Oct

A total of 2,337 Gram Panchayats (GPs) in Vidarbha region including 1,194 from Amravati Division and 1,143 from Nagpur Division, will go to polls in October. State Election Commission (SEC) announced a programme in this regard on Friday, and started enforcement of Model Code of Conduct for Elections in these
GP areas.

Vidarbha region has total 11 district, five in Amravati Division and six in Nagpur Division. Of these 11 districts, the highest 362 GPs are going to polls in Bhandara district. From Nagpur district, 238 GPs shall go to polls. Of the total 238 Gram Panchayats in Nagpur district going to polls next month, the highest 36 GPs are in Saoner tehsil. The tehsil-wise number of Gram Panchayats in Nagpur district going to polls next month is as follows: Saoner -- 36, Katol and Kamptee -- 27 each, Mouda -- 25, Kalmeshwar -- 24, Narkhed and Parseoni -- 22 each, Nagpur Rural -- 19, Bhiwapur -- 10, Ramtek -- eight, Umred and Hingna -- seven, and Kuhi -- four.

The most important feature of the elections to Gram Panchayats this time is that the Sarpanch will be elected through direct voting. Every voter will have to poll at least three and maximum four votes. Of these, one vote will be for electing Sarpanch directly, and remaining will be for members in respective prabhags. The party symbols will not be used in these elections. The ballot paper for the post of Sarpanch will be faint blue in colour, while the ballot papers for Scheduled Caste (faint pink), Scheduled Tribe (faint green), Citizen’s Backward Class (faint yellow), and General (white) also have been colour-coded. It has been mandatory that those contesting the election to the post of Sarpanch should be educated up to Class VII at least.

The nominations for the elections to GPs in Amravati Division will have to be filed between September 15 and September 22, and can be withdrawn till September 27. The polling will be conducted between 7.30 am and 5.30 pm on October 7, and the counting of votes will be done on October 9. For the GPs in Nagpur Division, nominations will be accepted between September 22 and September 29, and can be withdrawn till October 5. The polling will be conducted between 7.30 am and 5.30 pm, and counting of votes will be done on October 16. In Gadchiroli district, polling will be conducted between 7.30 am and 3 pm.
