Nagpur Metro’s first phase completed in record time

Devendra Fadnavis and Nitin Gadkari to flag off official trial run of Nagpur Metro from Chinchbhuvan to New Airport Station at 12 noon on September 30

Clearing all obstructions and racing ahead of time, the Maha Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has completed the first phase of Nagpur Metro from South Airport to New Airport of 5.4 kms in record 27 months duration. This achievement of MMRCL under the leadership of Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director appears spectacular if compared with other Metro Rail works, which are yet to commence work in last two years.


Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister for Road Transport and Shipping Nitin Gadkari will flag off trial run of Nagpur Metro from Chinchbhuvan to New Airport Station on September 30 at 12 noon on the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashmi.
Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chairman of State Bank of India will be present as the guests of honour.


Mayor Nanda Jichkar, Members of Parliament Ajay Sacheti, Krupal Tumane, Dr. Vikas Mahatme, Legislators Anil Sole, Nago Ganar, Prof. Jogendra Kawade, Prakash Gajbhiye, Girish Vyas, Sudhakar Deshmukh, Sudhakar Kohle, Krishna Khopde, Vikas Kumbhare, Dr. Milind Mane, and Sameer Meghe will also grace the occasion.


Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director of MMRCL while talking to mediapersons on Thursday near the site of inaugural trial of Metro Rail at MIHAN Depot said, the team of Nagpur Metro is working hard for the success of the trial run. The Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) will conduct oscillation trial in October. The paper work related to RDSO has been cleared by them.


The formal approval of the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety will be received after their inspection of the Nagpur Metro and they will provide formal approval for the commercial operations of the Metro Rail. Fadnavis will also launch a Maha Card for the Metro Services in Nagpur. The commercial operation is likely to start by the year end.
The construction work of Metro Rail began on May 31, 2015 and the trial run is taking place on September 30, in record time of two years and three months only.


The three coaches of Nagpur Metro have all the safety features. The passenger carrying capacity of the rail is 950 passengers i.e. 300 passengers in a coach. The coaches have 144 seats. Five seats will be marked as priority seats for senior citizens, patients, pregnant woman, women carrying infant baby. The MMRCL will use X L counter based signaling system during trial run. The speed of the train will be 25 kms/hours. Anil Kokate, General Manager (Admin) and Janak Garg, ED (RS) were present in the press conference.

SBI to issue Maha Card
State Bank of India (SBI) will issue Maha Card, the common mobility card for the public transport system in the city. Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chairman of SBI will be present on this occasion. The card can be used for Nagpur Metro services and for City Bus Transport. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) also cleared the proposal to use this mobility card. This is open loop card while other metro used closed loop card. This card can also be used for parking in Nagpur Metro Stations.


Brijesh Dixit said, this card will save around Rs 200 crore of MMRCL as SBI will borne expenditure to install the automatic fare collection system in all 38 stations. The SBI will issue 3.5 lakh cards to the passengers and has already . allotted Rs 30 crore to the Metro Rail. The Metro will give 10 percent concession to the commuters.

Highlights of Nagpur Metro Rail

Nagpur Metro has emergency push button to contact with driver in emergency situations.


Every coach will have 4 CCTVs to keep watch on movement of commuters.


The coach will have screens to show promotional films.


The announcement system in each coach will inform about next and present station.


The coaches will be internally connected with each other so that the passengers can seamless movement.


Two wheel chairs will be arranged for Divyang persons for hurdle free access and ride.


The stations are- Khapri Station, New Airport Station, and South Airport Station. The train will run between these three stations.


The distance between New Airport station to South Airport station is 1.8 kms. The distance between Khapri to MIHAN Depot is 1.5 kms and distance between Khapri to New Airport is 2.1 kms. Total distance will be 5.4 kms.


Nagpur Metro has achieved physical progress of 50 per cent and spent 32 per cent amount out of total Rs 8,660 crore.


Nagpur Metro has saved 8.5 per cent money out of total target of 10 per cent amount.


Nagpur Metro has received Rs 2,000 crore from financial institutions of Germany and France.
The speed of the train is 25 kms/hours
