Help of defence establishments and adjoining municipal councils was sought to control the fire

COLOSSAL stock of furniture, mattress and other goods worth lakhs gutted in fire that broke out at a multi-story furniture showroom under jurisdiction of Adhartal Police Station on Saturday evening. The Fire Department had to press as many as nine fire tenders, 15 tankers and also take help of defence establishments and adjoining municipal councils to douse the fire. Firefighters had to toil hard for hours to douse the fire. As the fire was controlled in time so it could not spread into shops and residential area adjacent to the showroom.


Reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained, however eyewitness said welding work was going on in the showroom which might have led to the fire. Likewise, exact property loss too could not be estimated.
Superintendent of Fire Department Sunil Jaiswal informed the newspaper that Rajkumar Khandelwal runs a four-storey furniture showroom at Raddi Chowki Square. Khandelwal is renovating the showroom.


At about 4.10 pm, the department got information about the fire in the showroom. Immediately, as many as three fire tenders were pressed into action to combat the fire. But, after reaching the site, firefighters saw fire had already engulfed top three floors of the showroom. They immediately called extra help. Accordingly, six more fire tenders were sent to the site with 15 water tankers. But, when fire could not be controlled, the Fire Department had to seek help from Gun Carriage Factory, Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, Ordnance Factory Khamaria, Panagar Municipal Council and Cantonment Board.


Later, with combined efforts fire could be controlled from being spread into adjoining shops and residential locality. The devastated fire triggered panic in entire area. Thick black fumes billowing of the furniture, foam, mattress, rubber was seen from a distance. People of adjoining localities gathered at the site to witness the inferno. After three hours of hard toil the fire fighters were able to douse the fire. However, as a precautionary measure the Fire Department has stationed two fire tenders at the site.
