Staff Reporter,

With Nal-Jal Yojana having been launched, 400 displaced labourer families in Kanhasaiya gram panchayat of Bhopal district will not have to be deprived of labour. These families residing in slums near drains of the city in the year 2012-13 were displaced in Kanhasaiya. About 2100 labourers of the poor category from these families have to wander in search for means of livelihood in the cities.

Many of these labourers had to remain deprived of work due to drinking water crisis as most of their time would be spent on fetching and arranging water. All the displaced families have been demanding redressal of the problem of drinking water from the government.

On their demand, the Public Health Engineering Department asked all the displaced families to assemble at one place and held a discussion with them. As a result the villagers agreed upon giving their contribution for the approval of the new Nal-Jal Yojana. The villagers got 3 percent of the cost of the scheme Rs 43 lakh 50 thousand deposited under the fixed procedure. Taking prompt action on this, the department got all work under Nal-Jal Yojana including digging of tubewells, rising main and sample construction done and made domestic tap water connections in all houses. Now drinking water is being supplied through domestic tap water connections in 401 houses of labourers in the village.

Alert and dedicated members were picked up from the labourer families and a drinking water committee was formed in the village. The committee is collecting water cess from all families for successful operation and maintenance of the scheme.

This initiative of Kanhasaiya has become a unique example for other villages facing drinking water crisis.
