FDA seizes 2,82,771 kgs of adulterated betel nuts worth Rs 4.53 cr in 2 days

A team of Food Safety Officials (FSOs) of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Nagpur Division, seized 2,82,771 kg adulterated betel nuts worth Rs 4.53 crore from different traders in city in last two days.
FSOs, under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner (Food) Milind Deshpande and Sharad Kolte and under the guidance of Joint Commissioner Shashikant Kekre, conducted raids on ten different traders and store houses of betel nuts situated in different areas in the city. On a secret tip received by FDA, a special drive was conducted on the traders of betel nuts, businessman performing processes on betel nuts, their go-downs and clod storage located in many areas.

The team of FSOs collected 12 samples of adulterated betel nuts from these firms and sent for analysis to Food Testing Laboratory. The action under Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSO) would be taken on them after receiving the analytical reports, informs Joint Commissioner S R Kekre.

FSOs raided M/S Shri Vidyasagar Roadways, Go-down, 23, Mahadevnagar, Surabardi; M/S Diya Gruha Udyog, Kalamna;M/S Jaiswal Trading Company, Plot Bo 53, Chikhali Layout, Kalamna; M/S Bhopal Indore Road Lines C-21, Transport Nagar, Bhandara Road; M/S Royal Marketing, Rasik Complex, Maskasath, Itwari; M/S PPP Enterprises house no 202, Ward no 39, Telipura; M/S Trimurti Traders, Maskasath; M/S P M Company, house no 159, near Nehru statue, Telipura; M/S S.T Traders house no 909, Chand Mohalla, Maskasath, Itwari and M/S Nandi Gruha Udyog, Chikhali Layout and seized 2,17,6631 kgs betel nuts worth Rs 3,87,27,330.

Apart from these raids, FSOs conducted raid at M/S Chirag Cold Storage Wathoda where betel nuts owned by M/S Nandi Gruha Udyog Chikhli Layout, M/S S T Traders, Maskasath, Itwari and M/S Royal Marketing, Rasik Complex, Maskasath, Itwari were stored. FSOs collected five samples of the betel nuts from the cold storage and seized a stock of 32,570 kgs betel nuts worth Rs 65,18,250 suspecting the quality of the same as adulterated.

The raids were conducted by FSOs including Abhay Deshpande (FSO Vigilance), Manoj Tiwari, Vinod Dhawad, Prafull Tople, Amitkumar Upalao, Seema Surkar, Akhilesh Raut, Anand Mahajan, Bhaskar Nandanwar, Lalit Soyam, Anant Chaudhari and Pravin Umap.

Joint commissioner, FDA, S R Kekare, has appealed to the general public to inform FDA on 0712-2562204 about any such illegal sale of scented betel nut, tobacco, pan masala etc as their sale and production is prohibited as per law in state.
