Staff Reporter,

Justice Arun Chaudhari, now a Senior Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, known for his bold and forthright judgements against corruption, economic frauds, scamsters and social evils, has been named as Chairman of Chandigarh Judicial Academy, a prime institute to train the
judges. Chief Justice S J Vazifdar of Punjab and Haryana High Court issued the order appointing Justice Chaudhari as President of this prestigious academy.

The academy also trains judges from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh on their request. Last year, Chief Justice of Sri Lanka along with 30 High Court judges from Sri Lanka had participated and the academy recently hosted a global conference which was attended by legal luminaries including present CJI Justice Dipak Misra.

Justice Chaudhari was transferred to Punjab and Haryana High Court on April 5, after serving Bombay High Court for 10 years and carving a niche for himself. Justice Chaudhari was in limelight for authoring many courageous and memorable decisions including denial of bail to alleged hardcore naxal supporter Prof G N Saibaba who now stands convicted for life, initiation of contempt proceedings against author Arundhati Roy for her demeaning remarks against judiciary.

His path-breaking judgement in case of Annabhau Sathe Mahamandal scam in which he described corruption as ‘hydra headed monster’ and several judgements against scamsters expressing sympathy and excruciating pain for the gullible depositors facing economic death, won him accolades. In this celebrated judgement he gave a wake up call to Government to act tough against corruption or else people may resort to non-payment of taxes, he cautioned the mandarins of power. Why Govt employees don't protest against their tainted colleagues, he had wondered and this no non-sense approach against corruption by public servants was repeated in several judgements and scamsters found it difficult to secure any relief.

He did not spare even the High Court administration in not speeding up MPID cases in the State Courts. In an almost a decade long career, he emerged as one of the shining star of Nagpur bench and someone who consistently took tough stance against criminals, fraudsters and perpetrators of heinous crimes. When Justice Chaudhari’s roster was abruptly changed, a majority of lawyers here lodged a strong protest and victims of economic frauds expressed solidarity with him.

Even his stint at Punjab and Haryana High Court has been quite eventful and memorable in last 18 months. He decided the oldest pending case pertaining to murder of DIG Joginder Singh Anand (related to Union Minister Maneka Gandhi) in which late DIG Anand’s wife Indu Anand and her son were named as accused for alleged murder, by castigating CBI for falsely involving wife and son of DIG Anand.

He has recently ordered Governments of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh Administration to take action against agents illegally doing immigration business as gullible and poor people are being cheated. Justice Chaudhari also heard and turned down 15 petitions filed by controversial Dera Saccha Sauda chief Ram Rahim. His appointment as head of the judicial academy has been widely held by legal circles here.
