Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu fetes Dantewada, Jashpur districts with National Literacy Award

On the occasion of International Literacy Day on Friday, Vice-President of India M Venkaiah Naidu felicitated two Naxal violence hit districts Dantewada and Jashpur with National Literacy Award at a glittering function held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. On the occasion, the Vice President also felicitated two gram panchayats including village panchayat Karmaha from Surguja district and village panchayat Temri from Raipur district. Thus the state received four National Awards under National Literacy Mission.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said Chhattisgarh is a new state which is fast developing in all areas including literacy. The central government has set a target to ensure cent percent literacy by 2022 in the country. Union Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javadekar was also present on the occasion.

Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh has extended his best wishes and congratulation to the two Naxal dominated Tribal districts - Dantewada and Jashpur, as well as gram panchayats Temri and Karmaha for getting selected for National Literacy Award. He has congratulated people, public representatives, administration and literacy campaign officers, akshar sainiks and social workers of both the districts for the achievement. Dr Singh said that it is a matter of pride for all of us that on the occasion of International Literacy Day these districts and gram panchayats were felicitated by Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu. This award is indicator of growing awareness regarding literacy and education in tribal regions of Chhattisgarh.

It is noteworthy that under Sakshar Bharat Abhiyan, more than 78,000 people out of 84,208 people surveyed in Naxal-violence affected Dantewada district have become literate. CEO of Jila Panchayat Dr Gaurav Singh informed that all 732 prisoners of Dantewada District Jail have also become completely literate, after getting associated with this campaign, and Dantewada district has now come into the category of 100 percent literate Jails.

District Administration had also conducted literacy campaign for industrial labourers in Kirandul iron ore mine area of Dantewada district. Digital literacy is also being emphasized in the district. People in this district are being made digital literate through ‘Aakhar Jhaapi’. CEO of Jashpur Deepak Soni informed that under Chief Minister Skill Development Scheme, neo-literates were associated with skill development so as to make them employable and digital literacy is also being promoted, for which Jashpur district has been selected for National Literacy Award.
