Last date for elections on various varsity bodies extended upto Feb 28

The State Government in its cabinet meeting on Tuesday has extended the last date for elections on various university bodies upto February 28. The last date of the direction issued in this connection was November 30.


The proposal for converting the direction into ordinance was tabled during the Winter Session of the State Legislature on December 11 itself. However, most of the period of the session was disrupted in noisy scenes and many issues could not be discussed. The Bill was not cleared by the Legislative Council during the session, for converting the Bill into a law.
There were some amendments suggested in the direction, which were incorporated in the Bill.


This include reservation for various categories by rotation in the Management Council. Completion of election procedure on various university bodies by November 30, amendment in rules pertaining to formation of the students council etc.
Pertaining to these suggestions amendment in various sections of Maharashtra Public Universities Act 2016 were proposed. The sections include 30(4), Section 62(2), Section 99, Section 109(3)(c) (g) and (gh) and Section 146.Fresh direction can be issued in this connection.


The Master Plans of the non-agricultural universities in Maharashtra for the academic year 2018-19 were cleared after the separate Higher Education and Development Commission for scrutiny of the plans, was received. Clearance of master plans by this agency is mandatory. The objective behind formation of this body is to facilitate implementation of the plan and also to regulate time for granting permission to new colleges.
