Access to information is an important tool the people have for countering abuses, mismanagement, corruption and other kind of injustice, said SIC, H L Trivedi

Right to Information (RTI) has slowly become the right to life for common public as access to information is an important tool they have for countering abuses, mismanagement, corruption and other kind of injustice. In this digital era, people have the right to know to be able to take part in the participatory development going on across the nation, opined H L Trivedi, State Information Commissioner (SIC), Government of Madhya Pradesh.

While talking to ‘The Hitavada’, State Information Commissioner, H L Trivedi was seen quite enthusiastic about further affirmative transformations to be made under RTI at the level of various departments working in public and private sectors as well as in society. “RTI, soon after its inception, has started helping to maintain transparency in the departmental work culture. The officers, who in the past, neither used to understand their liabilities nor considered themselves answerable towards general public, suddenly became alert, active and liable towards their official duties and responsibilities. This positive transformation is credited to RTI Act,” expressed the State Information Commissioner.

According to the State Information Commissioner, almost 50 percent of the applications table before the Information Commission are concerned with the Panchayat and urban local bodies jointly. “A total of 53 departments come under the periphery of State Information Commission. Almost 30 percent applications or complaints we received at the Commission are concerned with Panchayat, while 17 percent are concerned with urban local bodies. While 53 percent of the complaints received are jointly belong to the remaining 51 departments. This indicates the immediate need these departments have to fulfilled by upgrading their working to fulfill their liabilities towards common public,” he added.
