Special Correspondent,

Total 781 New Year revellers were booked by Traffic Police for drunken driving in the Second Capital on Sunday. Despite warnings by the City Police during the run up to New Year celebrations, the number drunk drivers on this New Year eve was substantially high as compared to previous year.
Last year during New year celebrations, City Police had booked a total of 527 persons for driving under the influence of liquor.

Of the 781 persons booked in drunken driving cases this year, 58 are car drivers, 704 are two-wheeler riders, 14 autorickshaw drivers and five truck drivers. In most of the cases, cops impounded their vehicles and registered an offence under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act against them. A total of 191 cases were registered by Traffic Chamber V, followed by 182 Traffic Chamber IV, 156 Traffic Chamber II, 147 Traffic Chamber III and 105 Traffic Chamber I.
Similarly, Traffic Branch of Nagpur (Rural) Police booked 276 drunk drivers in the district.

Separate teams of Traffic Police armed with breath-analysers to check drunken driving were deployed in the city and rural areas of the district. Similarly, cops had set up special squads to check youngsters performing stunts on mobikes, over speed, zig-zag and dangerous driving.

However, most of the revellers devised a novel way to dodge the Traffic cops’ dragnet for drunk drivers by hiring taxis and cabs to reach the venue and back home. This resulted in acqute shortage of cabs during peak hours.
A senior officer told ‘The Hitavada’ that Traffic Police would continue the drive against drunk drivers to prevent road accidents in the Seciond Capital.
