Staff Reporter,

After a long wait and repeated inspections, Nagpur city has been declared as Open Defecation Free (ODF) City of Maharashtra. Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs made this announcement on Tuesday. The Swachh Bharat Mission Cell of State Government has already declared Nagpur as OD free city. The central team after detailed scrutiny declared several cities and municipal councils as OD free.

A visibly happy Municipal Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal while sharing this information with The Hitavada said, this is a success of consistent efforts taken by office bearers, administration, sanitation officers and people at large. The NMC has tried hard to get success in the certification from the Central Government. The civic body succeeded in changing the habit of the slum dwellers of preferring open defecation.

The team of Quality Council of India (QCI) visited Nagpur in December 2017 to inspect the open defecation status of Nagpur city. They clicked 1,700 photographs and visited almost 100 spots to inspect the present situation. The delegates of the inspection team were equipped with geo tagging software. They also recorded comment of the residents of nearby locality regarding OD Free position. After verification from the Head Office, they were informed about their next visit.

The team visited railway track, Hazari Pahad, Sudam Nagari, Yashodhara Nagar, Chikhli, Shivangaon, and other places. However, they did not find any case of open defecation in these areas. It may be mentioned that the good morning team of the Health Department is continuously visiting these spots and for last two months, not a single case of OD has been registered. The team of Health Department working under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal had achieved this Herculean task by making continuos efforts. He was daily monitoring the open defecation status of the city. The certificate from the Central Government for the Open Defecation free status will be helpful in improving ranking in Swachh Bharat Survey.

In last one year, the civic body has worked hard to provide individual toilets, community toilets and public toilets to the slum dwellers. The NMC has to provide 12,000 toilets to slum dwellers in the city. The local body had constructed 11,500 toilets in last six months. The remaining 500 toilets have some disputes. After Mudgal took over the affairs of civic body, he aggressively worked to meet this impossible target. Commissioner Mudgal himself visited several spots during morning hours to discuss the issue with people and to understand their problems. The team under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Jayant Dandegaokar and Health Officer Dr. Pradeep Dasarwar worked hard to achieve this target.
