FINDINGS of an NGO, working for wildlife conservation, that witchcraft practices are behind the rise in killing of tigers in Madhya Pradesh highlights the need for launching an anti-superstition campaign in the State. Till now, it was widely believed that the body parts of tigers were smuggled to China, where they are used for making medicines, which are in high demand there. Though this is true, the claim of an NGO that witchcraft practices also causing deaths of tigers should be cause of added worry. Madhya Pradesh, which boasts of maximum number of tigers, has also witnessed maximum number of tiger deaths, many of them due to poaching. The rise in killing of tigers is a big setback to the tiger conservation measures. The Government, which has roped in celebrities for tiger conservation, should launch a renewed campaign to remove blind belief among the people. The focus of the anti-superstition drive should be in villages located along the periphery of tiger reserves. Spread of education in villages will also help in removing the blind belief.

SIGNIFICANT MOVE

THE first Army exercise between India and Vietnam has opened up new opportunities for both the countries to boost their cooperation in the new area of defence. There is a lot to learn for the armies, of both the countries, from each other during the exercise. History tells us that the US, the world’s super power, could not defeat Vietnamese armed forces even after a long battle of 20 years and had to beat a retreat. And Vietnam was gracious enough to give the credit of their invincibility to the guerrilla tactics they adopted during the war, taking inspiration from the Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Vietnamese leaders are so fascinated by the valour of Shivaji Maharaj and the guerrilla tactics adopted by him to defeat the mighty Mughals that they make it a point to visit his samadhi whenever they visit India. In view of their bond of love for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the changing security scenario in the region due to China’s hegemonic policies, there is a special significance to the military cooperation between the two nations.
