The Railway Board (RB) has directed all the 16 zonal railways, including South Eastern Central Railway (SECR), to report the actual punctuality of mail as well as express trains either originating or passing through their areas.According to an official, the Board has decided to maintain punctuality in the new format to check any manipulation in the actual reporting percentage of passenger train punctuality from January 1, 2018.

“The Board has fixed grading system to record punctuality of passenger trains in each zone,” he said. “Under the new grading system, punctuality above 85 per cent will be placed in ‘A+’ category while those between 75 and 85 per cent will be in the ‘A’ category. Similarly, the punctuality rate between 60 and 75 per cent will be in the ‘B’ category while those below 60 per cent will be placed in the ‘C’ category,” he said.

The officials of SECR confirmed that Board executive director has issued a directive recently in this regard. “This step is praiseworthy as no zonal railway will hesitate in reporting the actual punctuality rate of passenger trains in the new format,” said senior executive of SECR. As per the officials, the Board has also asked each zone as well as division to ensure installation of ‘data loggers’ device at all major stations.

The new system would help railways maintain punctuality of each passenger train automatically when it enters the station where the facility of ‘data loggers’ system is installed, he said, adding this system is already available at Bilaspur Junction of SECR. The officials stated that the Board has also stressed on the need of installing global positioning system (GPS) in each zone to facilitate actual location of passenger trains. The new GPS device is being linked to real-time punctuality monitoring and analysis (RPMA) in each zone.

Besides, railways intends to complete this project on the Howrah-Delhi and Delhi-Mumbai routes latest by February 2018 on trial basis, he said, adding the new system would monitor the booked speed limit of each mail and express train. Arun Vora, MLA of Durg-Urban and member of SECR Passenger Forum asserted that it is a good initiative and will improve the timings of all trains.
