Irrigation backlog, farmers’ suicides, unemployment, lack of industrialisation will be the issues to be highlighted during the rally, says the Katol MLA

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Katol Dr Ashish Deshmukh has organised a ‘Vidarbha Atmabal Yatra’ from January 7 to February 13 to raise the issue of irrigation backlog, farmers’ suicides, unemployment, lack of industrialisation, malnutrition, Naxalism, overall development of the region and others.

Dr Deshmukh, while talking to mediapersons at Press Club here on Saturday, warned that he would resign from the party membership and Legislative Assembly membership as ‘the pre-poll promises were not fulfilled’.

Dr Deshmukh said, formation of Vidarbha state is the only solution of all problems of the region. Maharashtra is under the debt burden of Rs 4.50 lakh crore and it is impossible to grow under it, he said. The respective State Governments had diverted the funds meant for creating irrigation potential in Vidarbha to Western Maharashtra, he alleged.

Launching a frontal attack on present BJP-led Central and State Governments for not removing backlog and not promoting industrialisation in backward region of Vidarbha, Dr Ashish Deshmukh said, the present Government has failed to stop farmers’ suicides also in last three-and-a-half years. Telangana Government is giving 24x7 electricity to farmers at for free and Maharashtra Government is snapping their power connections over non-payment of dues. Telangana Government has allocated Rs 24,000 crore for creating irrigation potential and Maharashtra Government has allocated only Rs 7,000 crore for the purpose.

The disparity between Western Maharashtra and Vidarbha could not be removed due to inadequate allocation of funds. Therefore, Vidarbha statehood is the only solution, he added. BJP-led Government has failed in increasing industrialisation in the region. Reliance Group, Patanjali Group laid foundation stones for their projects but there is no development, Dr Deshmukh alleged.

Unemployment is getting bigger and in coming years unemployed youths may start suicides due to lack of jobs. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is trying to bring changes in the backward region but his efforts are bearing no fruits, he said. “Chief Minister is organising Magnetic Maharashtra meet instead of Vibrant Vidarbha Summit. The ease of doing business policy is not effective in the State. Smaller states are growing faster and larger states are slowing down. Therefore, Vidarbha statehood is necessary,” he reiterated. Replying to a question, he said that Fadnavis and Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar had organised different rallies to press for the demand of Vidarbha statehood.

Now, BJP is in power at the Centre and in the State too. Therefore, Dr Deshmukh observed, the Government can create state of Vidarbha to resolve the problems. He also sent a letter to Fadnavis before winter session of State Legislature raising these questions. Replying to another question, Dr Deshmukh admitted that BJP had issued a notice on December 20 to him during winter session of State Legislature. “I had to give reply to the notice by December 21 but I have not replied to the notice till now,” he added.
