Staff Reporter,

A leopard attacked and killed a small girl in the forests of little known hamlet of Chhindwara district on Sunday noon. Victim had gone to forest along with mother and sister to collect fire wood. Forest Department has provided immediate relief of Rs 5,000. Later, financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh will be provided to family of deceased girl.

Talking to ‘The Hitavada’, CCF of Chhindwara, UK Subuddhi told that girl Kalpana (aged 5 to 6 years) of non-descript hamlet Mohali Mata had gone to nearby jungle along with mother and sister to collect fire woods. All of a sudden, leopard pounced on her and inserted its sharp teethes into her neck.

No sooner did the Forest Department officials came to know about the incident, they immediately rushed to the spot and took victim girl Kalpana to nearby Tamia hospital. But she succumbed to her wounds on way to hospital.
“We are investigating the case. However, leopard had not eaten the body of deceased girl hence it could be said that leopard is not man eater. Possibly it may have attacked the girl by sensing some danger,” he said.

He informed that girl’s body had been sent for autopsy. As part of immediate financial help, Rs 500 was given to victim girl’s family. Later, according to Government norms, financial assistance of total Rs 4 lakh would be given to deceased’s girl family. Villagers have been advised not to venture into deep forest after the incident.
