Special Correspondent,

AFTER a brief lull, fake policemen’s gang went on a looting spree in the city on Monday morning. Masquerading as cops, the tricksters targeted three senior citizens and a water tax collector in Rana Pratap Nagar, Hudkeshwar, Sonegaon and Bajaj Nagar areas and made away with their cash and gold ornaments collectively worth Rs 1.47 lakh.

A resident of Plot No 65, Bhausaheb Surve Nagar, Jaitala Road, Bhalchandra Sewakram Jain (65) was on his way to the bank to get his passbook printed. Two men claiming to be policemen intercepted him. The ‘cops’ told him that police were searching for some suspects after a cloth merchant carrying Marijuana was nabbed in the area. They then forced him to remove his gold cgain and a gold ring worth Rs 50,000 and wrap them in a handkerchief. The trickster duo distracted his attention, removed the gold chain and ring from the handkerchief and fled the spot. Only after reaching home, Jain realised that the ‘cops’ had taken away the gold ornaments.

Pundlik Bapuraoji Waghmare (65), a resident of Shramik Nagar, Parsodi, too fell prey to the tricksters. Two men posing as policemen accosted him when he and his brother were going to a garage to repair their vehicle at Nagar Vikas Society in Manish Nagar. Using similar modus operandi, the fake cops looted Waghmare’s gold chain and a ring worth Rs 25,000.

Similarly, two bike-borne tricksters accosted Anant Govindrao Dahigaonkar (69) in front of Plot No 9, Zadgaonkar’s house at Buty Layout, Laxmi Nagar, when he was on a morning walk. One of them impersonated as an Excise Inspector and the other a policeman. They told Dahigaonkar that they wanted to conduct a search as some persons were possessing narcotics.

The two ‘cops’ asked Dahigaonkar to remove the two gold rings worn by him and wrap in a handkerchief. They then took the two rings from him on the pretext of wrapping them in a handkerchief, and deftly pocketed them. A resident of Quarter No 85, Income Tax Colony, Dahigaonkar later realised that the self-styled officers had stolen his gold rings.

In another incident, two pseudo cops looted Rs 43,000 cash from water tax collector, Dilip Laxmanrao Kawadkar (56) in front of Manasi Enclave in Old Kailash Nagar in Hudkeshwar area. A resident of Plot No 137, Shivam Apartment, New Amar Nagar, Kawadkar was on way to his office to deposit the cash collected from residents towards water tax bills when the incident took place. The bogus cops stealthily stole the cash from him after diverting his attention.

Following complaints by the victims, separate cases under Sections 170, 420 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code have been registered at Rana Pratap Nagar, Sonegaon, Bajaj Nagar and Hudkeshwar Police Stations.
